Short Novel (Translation of Sinhala writer Usula P. Wijesuriya’s Ambegris)/Tamil
Ampataya is a translation of the original novel by Sinhala writer Usula P. Wijesuriya. Setting in the Sinhala rural village, this short novel with its simple language explores the main character Sumane who is desperately looking for a chance to survive and works hard to support his parents-less family. All the while the society outcasts him for his mere acts of survival and criminalizes him. In the end, it becomes the story of humanity, showing the readers how when a chance is given – even the smallest one – human capabilities are infinite. This amazing story is not lost in translation. It is conveyed well by the experienced translator Theva (Swiss), who has translated and continues to translate books that are relevant to the Sri Lankan context (books such as ‘Child Soldier’ by China Keitetsi, ‘My name is Victoria’ by Victoria Donda).
